IVF Due Date (Embryo Transfer Date)

For IVF pregnancies the due date is set from the embryo transfer date: EDD = transfer date + 266 days − embryo age, i.e. +261 days for a day-5 (blastocyst) transfer and +263 days for a day-3 transfer (ACOG).

  • Embryo transfer date
  • Embryo age at transfer: Day 3 (cleavage stage); Day 5 (blastocyst); Day 6 (blastocyst)
  • Calculate gestational age as of (optional)

Interpretation

ResultMeaning
Day-3 transferEDD = transfer + 263 days
Day-5 transferEDD = transfer + 261 days
Day-6 transferEDD = transfer + 260 days

Formula

EDD = transfer date + (266 − embryo age in days) · GA (days) = (date − transfer) + 14 + embryo age

Clinical pearls

  • ACOG: ART pregnancies should be dated by embryo age and transfer date, not by ultrasound or LMP.
  • Frozen and fresh transfers use the same calculation; what matters is embryo age at transfer.

FAQ

How do you calculate the due date after a day-5 transfer?

Add 261 days to the transfer date (266 days from fertilisation minus the 5 days the embryo has already developed).

How many weeks pregnant am I on the day of a day-5 transfer?

2 weeks 5 days (19 days), because GA is counted from an equivalent LMP 14 days before fertilisation.
