Mifflin-St Jeor Equation (Resting Energy Expenditure)

Mifflin-St Jeor estimates resting energy expenditure: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (y) + 5 for men, or − 161 for women. It is the most accurate predictive equation for healthy and obese adults; multiply by an activity factor for total daily needs.

  • Weight (kg or lb)
  • Height (cm or m or in)
  • Age (years)
  • Sex: Male; Female
—

Formula

REE (kcal/day) = 10 × W (kg) + 6.25 × H (cm) − 5 × A (y) + 5 (men) or − 161 (women)

Clinical pearls

  • Predicts measured REE within ±10% in about 80% of non-obese and 70% of obese adults.
  • Use actual body weight; not validated in critically ill patients.

FAQ

What is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation?

REE = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5 for men or − 161 for women.

How do I estimate daily calorie needs?

Multiply REE by an activity factor: 1.2 sedentary, 1.375 light, 1.55 moderate, 1.725 very active, 1.9 extremely active.
