ABIC Score (Alcoholic Hepatitis)

ABIC = 0.1 × age + 0.08 × bilirubin (mg/dL) + 0.3 × creatinine (mg/dL) + 0.8 × INR. It stratifies 90-day survival in alcohol-associated hepatitis: <6.71 low risk (~100%), 6.71–8.99 intermediate (~70%), ≥9.0 high risk (~25%).

  • Age (years)
  • Total bilirubin (mg/dL or µmol/L)
  • Serum creatinine (mg/dL or µmol/L)
  • INR

Interpretation

ResultMeaning
< 6.71Low risk (90-day survival ~100%)
6.71–8.99Intermediate (~70%)
≥ 9.0High risk (~25%)

Formula

ABIC = (age × 0.1) + (bilirubin mg/dL × 0.08) + (creatinine mg/dL × 0.3) + (INR × 0.8)

Clinical pearls

  • Derived in biopsy-proven alcoholic hepatitis (Barcelona); survival figures are from that cohort.
  • Bilirubin and creatinine must be in mg/dL; SI values are converted automatically when the unit is given.
